On raised voices

Raised voices.
I’m familiar with you.
You show up every time a threat looms.

Oh raised voices, I’m familiar with you.

Masked by pangs of anger.
Usually hiding, is a fear.
Of rejection.
Of hurt.
Or the helplessness that ensues.

Oh raised voices, I’m familiar with you.

Scared of your identity.
Or the threat to it, maybe.
Are you so afraid of another point of view?

Oh raised voices, I’m familiar with you.

Why are you afraid to listen.
Or calmly speak your truth.

Oh raised voices, I’m familiar with you.

You show up all armed.
When there is never really a need.
Like you are lurking right beneath.
And spring up instantly.
Just like catching a breath.
So why not just breathe deeply instead?

Breath is your antidote.
Just one big exhale.
And, there, you defuse.

Oh raised voices, I’m familiar with you.

Do you think being loud is being heard?
Is that why you create such a stir?
If only you trusted the power of calm.
All the words you shout, would be received with open arms.
If only you let go.
If only you withdrew.

Oh raised voices, I’m familiar with you.

I know you.
You won’t go unheard.
If you trust your inner self, yes you.
You’ll come through.
I promise you.
Oh raised voices, you’ll get familiar with me too.
